RAISING WATER TEMPERATURE
As global warming raises the temperature of our planet and the ocean, the symbiosis between the corals and the algaes that nourishes them is alterated. Corals then cannot get the energy to grow and reproduce and as a result they die.

OCEAN ACIDIFICATION
Oceans absorb about 30% of the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. As CO2 emissions keep on increasing, so does the ocean’s acidity. Coral skeletons are made from calcium carbonate, which is eaten away by more acidic waters, putting the entire marine ecosystem at risk.
